EMS 911 Telecommunicator
EMS 911 Telecommunicator - FULL-TIME
Reports to: Supervisors, EMS Director
Classification: Non-exempt

Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the EMS Supervisors, works as an integral part of the EMS team as the first point of contact in any emergency EMS call. The telecommunicator will monitor and direct emergency and non-emergency dispatches utilizing call prioritization, all/incident location identification, and intra-departmental responses following policies and procedures to minimize potential dangers to the community and first responders.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operates a multi-line telephone console system, alerting system, and TDD system for the deaf and hearing impaired
- Ask questions to interpret, analyze, and anticipate the caller’s situation as to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch appropriate resources, or refer callers to other agencies.
- Determine and assign the priority level of the call and enter the data into a computer aided dispatch
- Identify appropriate number and type of apparatus to dispatch
- Dispatch and coordinate the responses of public safety agencies
- Perform emergency medical dispatch and crisis intervention services
- Monitor and operate a radio console and computer equipment
- Monitor and respond to a variety of technical systems and alarms
- Hears and understands multiple sound sources
- Understands jurisdictional boundaries, as well as thoroughfares, landmarks, public buildings, and waterways within the jurisdiction
- Uses judgement and decision-making skills to evaluate situations, establish priorities, and resolve matters
- Read and follow oral and written instructions
- Actively listens and communicates effectively through clear speech and hearing
- Handles multiple tasks to receive and communicate information to and from several sources ensuring calls for service are dispatched and monitored in a timely manner.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Use of the English language, both spoken and written.
- Understanding of office computer hardware (i.e.: PC’s, tablets, laptops, copier, printer, fax) and software (i.e.: Microsoft Office, EMR, email, internet)
- Confidentiality and integrity.
- Must possess good customer service and people skills.
- Understand basic dispatch codes, as well as standard abbreviations and industry terminology commonly used by emergency medical services.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent;
- No experience required; 1-2 years preferred
- EMD Certification preferred or must obtain within first three (3) months of employment.
- EMT-B optional
- CPR Provider Certification
